Censoring the rockstar

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Nickelback have re-released their song ‘Rockstar’. For those that don’t know, Nickelback are a popular beat combo. I rather like the song; however, VH1 has a different take on things. VH1 have censored some of the lines. They are, with the inaudible word in italics, the drugs come cheap Everybody’s got a drug dealer on [...]

Video killed the radio star

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Tom Watson links to a fascinating article on Rolling Stone magazine’s website about the deleterious effects MP3s are having on the quality of music, both in terms of fidelity and whether it’s worth listening to at all. The article, which is worth reading in full1, essentially says that people want to make music with more [...]

The 'ultimate tabloid headline' meme

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Despite everything else that could be talked about, lots of bits of the media are talking about the Royal blackmail – apparently, a minor Royal was being blackmailed with a sex and drugs video – so I’m starting a meme: what is the best tabloid headline you can invent for this story? I’m going for [...]

Songs in the key of B

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

I have stumbled and mumbled my way onto a meme on Chris Dillow’s website – top ten songs beginning with a letter of the alphabet. I’m choosing the letter ‘B’. 1. Brown Eyed Handsome Man – Buddy Holly and the Crickets2. Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon and Garfunkel3. Blue Suede Shoes – Elvis Presley4. [...]

What happened to the Smashing Pumpkins?

Monday, August 6th, 2007

The Smashing Pumpkins have a special place in my heart – the first CD I ever bought was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Just goes to show that I was both cool and pretentious at a tender age. I’m listening to the new album, Zeitgeist, and it’s OK, but not up to Mellon Collie [...]

The Daily Telegraph on Charlie Gillett

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

I’d like to recommend this article in today’s Daily Telegraph on Charlie Gillett by Peter Culshaw. Mr Culshaw sings the praises of Charlie Gillett, the hugely influential host of World of Music on the BBC World Service and, until his illness last year, of the Sound of the World on BBC Radio Four. I started [...]

BBC iPlayer

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

The BBC is proposing to launch its on demand TV system, iPlayer, but it will only be available to people using a Microsoft operating system. Firstly, this expresses a n unjustifiable commercial bias. Secondly, it fails in the BBC’s obligation to provide universal services by excluding Mac and Linux users. Thirdly, it supports Microsoft’s digital [...]

Bat for Lashes

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

I’m listening to ‘Fur and Gold‘, the debut album by Bat for Lashes, aka Natasha Khan. It is definitely worth a listen. Her voice has a similar, ethereal quality to Kate Bush and her music is, IMHO, reminscent of Bjork and, at times, Sigur Ros. All in all, I’m rather impressed. xD.

Glastonbury

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Apparently, on the way back from Glastonbury, there were problems with the trains and so there was a large group of people waiting in a very muddy field. Some wag started saying it was like a concentration camp – at which point someone in a uniform arrived to tell them that they could get on [...]

Last.fm and Queen Adreena

Friday, May 18th, 2007

I recently signed up to last.fm1. It is a great site – you find music similar to your current tastes. You can either just plug in names of bands and do various searches around that, or put a piece of software that notes what you listen to and how often (yes, it does sound a [...]
