Psychic predictions for MMIX and MMX
In 2008, the Psychics and Mediums Network posted some predictions for 2009.
- There will be an assassination attempt on Barack Obama
(UPDATE: Looks like this one may have happened before the 2009 date predicted. There was a neo-nazi assaination plot foiled on 27th October 2008. Note that these predictions were posted on the 9th October 2008)
Fail. It was a prediction for 2009, not 2008. - There will be serious tensions within Europe as the Euro free falls with both France and Germany threatening to leave.
What does ‘serious tensions’ mean? Even so, neither Germany nor France threatened to leave, so fail. - Gordon Brown will be forced out of office and an early election will be called.
Fail. - A number of C of E bishops and senior ecclesiastical leaders convert to Catholicism simultaneously threatening to undermine the very existence of the church.
There’s been talk, but no action. Fail. - There is a world wide rekindling of socialist ideals and a major swing back towards communism in Russia.
Fail. - There will be a major terrorist attack in Dubai
Fail - There will be a serious pollution problem in France – possibly in Paris with the contamination of the River Seine. Also a dam will burst in the Far East – maybe China.
Fail - Britain sees many of its top companies go bust and in particular holiday firms, aviation companies and the building companies.
Fail. ‘Many’ did not go bust. - Victoria Beckham will become pregnant with a long awaited daughter. And Jordan will announce she’s pregnant too.
Fail. - There will be a knife attack on a top celebrity
I have no idea.
So that’s, at best, one out of ten.
Let’s see what they’re predicting for 2010
- Bin Laden dies.
Well, it’s relatively clear cut, although it could mean either ‘he actually dies’ or ‘we find out he’s dead’ - Quantum physicists discover extraordinary way generate electricity from water.
Meaningless. Practical or theoretical? Developmental or in practice? - MP caught in indecent act in public toilet.
Let’s see… - Important public figure revealed to be a member of a white supremacy movement with 2010 seeing a serious increase in racist attacks
I hope the latter is incorrect, but doesn’t require psychic powers to predict that it might be a result of the economic downturn. And what, exactly, qualifies as an ‘important public figure’? - Secret human cloning experiment attempts to clone famous person.
Uh-huh. And how will we know if it’s secret? And does this mean a real attempt, or a fraudulent one? And what qualifies as famous? - X factor in 2010 will be won by a group of friends who were choir boys together.
Either true or not true, I think. - Britain pulls out of Afghanistan leaving only a few token troops.
While ‘token’ isn’t defined, it does mean that a draw-down in troops doesn’t qualify. - Iran gives up its quest for a nuclear bomb but South Korea continues to threaten peace.
South Korea? Surely with their clairvoyant powers they haven’t confused the RoK with the DPRK! Anyway, we shall see. - Celebrity is kidnapped and a ransom demand made.
What qualifies as a celebrity? Besides, given the number of celebs around the world, the probability of that happening must be relatively high. - Barack Obama expresses an interest in holistic healing and ‘world healing’ becomes a dominant theme and key phrase to his 2010 speeches. He brokers a historic deal between Israel and the Palestinians.
We shall see… I sincerely hope that he doesn’t go for some sort of new age mumbo jumbo -
The monsoon arrives late but falls as one torrential downpour causing unprecedented flooding and human tragedy. Florida too sees three major hurricanes in close succession that strike deep into the continent with higher than normal tremors on San Andreas fault line.
Not an earthquake, but ‘higher tremors than usual’, not being clear whether that’s more in severity or more in number or both. We’ll see about the others. -
The Vancouver Olympics see a young person, who is barely old enough to compete, walk away with a gold medal
Happens every time, doesn’t it? -
The last Big Brother series ends with tragedy as someone on set is seriously hurt.
We’ll see. Could be staff or celebs. -
System failures on the US space lab require a rescue mission with Russian help.
I assume that they mean Destiny on the ISS. A rescue mission is doubtful, as the rest of the ISS could keep working even if Destiny shut down. Given that it’s multinational and the Russians do a lot of space flights, Russian help is practically guaranteed. -
Petrol prices shoot through the roof as OPEC make price fixing deal with Russia.
We’ll see. What qualifies as through the roof? If prices shoot through the roof because of other reasons, does this count as a fail? -
Meanwhile, Britain and Germany make a green energy deal with a big new wind turbine factory opened in UK.

Japanese bullet train terrorist attack attempt is foiled.
We’ll see -
Nationwide strike by civil servants causes widespread disruption. The Post Office unions continue to take strike action and the government announces that it plans eventually to renationalise the railways.
We’ll see. -
Police corruption claims are made as a huge illegal immigrant ring is uncovered.
We’ll see. Again, I assume that claims of corruption other than in conjunction with this ‘huge ring’ don’t count. -
Australia win back the ashes
Doesn’t take a genius… - European parliament move to make heroin legal for addicts who wish to take it under medical supervision. The war on drugs heats up as central London sees a street shoot out between rival gangs.
Very doubtful, as the EP doesn’t have that competence. And haven’t we seen the latter anyway?
Unsurprisingly, the wording is nebulous. The 2009 predictions also failed to predict oh, the attack on the Pope, and so on. I’ll keep an eye through the year.
