Daily Mail criticises government for lack of socialism
No, really. The Daily Mail is criticising the government for (apparently) considering implementing means testing free bus passes for over-60s because of the cost and, more particularly, the way the cost falls on local authorities. It would seem that, by arguing for universal provision rather than means testing, they are criticising the government for being, er, insufficiently leftie.
The reason for the opposition is made clear in the headline – it would affect the middle class.
While I’m having a go at the Heil, and because I’ve had to look at the website, here’s the headline of a story from the FeMail section
Wanting Aniston’s arms and Angelina’s cleavage has led women to a body-hatred crisis… but are men to blame?
That’s the last headline in a sidebar that has pictures praising Cindy Crawford’s looks in a bikini, saying that ordinary women could never look as good as Cheryl Cole in a particular bikini and criticising Nigella Lawson for not wearing makeup.
Hypocrisy? The Mail? Shurely shome mishtake!

You’re right to put the ‘(apparently)’ in. The premise of the Mail story is wrong thankfully.

I guessed as much. You make the very good point at your place that it would be electoral suicide to restrict, or even be seen to be thinking about restricting, the pass; it’s very popular with the 11m pensioners!
I wouldn’t put it past the Mail to be fully aware of that.
xD.

Oh yes they’re aware alright, hence the big picture of Brown, even though the LGA is a Tory-dominated body.

It is not wrong, the out come has again been switched again by Brown from a Thought, to an idea, to a U turn.

Kerry MacCarthy MP has more on why it’s a load of old Daily Mail nonsense:

Thanks, LM. The letter on Kerry’s website from the vice-chair of the LGA really does hole the Mail’s ‘story’ below the waterline.
