Europarties in national governments
Just doing some working out for a blog post and I thought this might be useful to record. I believe it’s all right.
| Country | Governing Party | Europarty |
| Austria | SDP | PES |
| Belgium | CD&V | EPP |
| Bulgaria | Socialist | PES |
| Cyprus | Communist | Nordic Green Left |
| Czech Republic | Civic Platform | EC&R |
| Denmark | Venstre | ALDE |
| Estonia | Reform | ALDE |
| Finland | SDP | PES |
| France | UMP | EPP |
| Germany | CDU | EPP |
| Greece | New Democracy | EPP |
| Hungary | Ind/Soc | PES |
| Irish Republic | FF | ALDE |
| Italy | PdL | EPP |
| Latvia | NEP | EPP |
| Lithuania | Ind/Con | PES |
| Luxembourg | CSV | EPP |
| Malta | Nationalist | EPP |
| Netherlands | CDA | EPP |
| Poland | PiS | EC&R |
| Portugal | Socialist | PES |
| Romania | Ind/Popular | EPP |
| Slovakia | SDP | PES |
| Slovenia | SDP | PES |
| Spain | PSOE | PES |
| Sweden | Moderate | EPP |
| UK | Labour | PES |
The totals are 9 for the Party of European Socialists, 12 for the European People’s Party, 1 for the Nordic Green Left, 2 for the new European Conservatives and Reformists and three for the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe.
I’ve gone by the party of the head of government. A couple of HoGs are independents, but are listed by the party to which they were affiliated (Bulgaria) or which supported them (Hungary).
xD.

And what do you conclude, Dave? And how’s the new lifestyle, by the way?

The new lifestyle is great, tyvm, although a bit busy as we’re moving house on Friday.
I’m not sure what conclusions I draw; I need to do saw more searching. I’m looking at what might happen with the new President of the European Council, who will be elected by the members – that is, the heads of government – by QMV.
PSE and EPP aligned parties have the great bulk of capitals but it does look as if, because of the high standard set by QMV, a president is going to have to be effectively chosen by consensus. I’m not sure what happens if no-one can achieve the qualified majority.
xD.
