Alan Haselhurst for Speaker
I would vote for Sir Alan Haselhurst for Speaker, were I able, for three reasons.
Firstly, I think he is the candidate who will do the best job of chairing the House of Commons and reining in its yah-boo tendency. He has been one of the firmest and fairest deputy speakers.
Secondly, everyone else is saying what they want to do to reform expenses as Speaker. It is not the Speaker’s job; it is the job of MPs. For the Speaker to become involved in a political decision, whereby they have at one moment to be a partisan for a position they have had a hand in drafting and at the next moment to be an independent chair, is inappropriate. I believe that he would be good at promoting and explaining democracy in general and the Commons in particular, here and abroad.
Thirdly, I would be a little uneasy about having three speakers from the same party in a row.
I would add that Sir Alan1 has written some great books on the exploits of Outcasts CC; Occasionally Cricket, Eventually Cricket, Accidentally Cricket and Unusually Cricket.
xD.
1 – He must be so glad to be the only Sir Alan in politics now that the other one has been ennobled.
