Peter and Katie
At twenty to nine this morning, BBC Breakfast were interviewing someone from Heat magazine about the breakup of the marriage of Peter Andre and Katie ‘Jordan’ Price. Even within the vapid world of ‘sleb news’, the divorce of two C-listers, sad as it may be, is hardly news. The fact that they have courted, lived, married and will presumably separate in full view of the public does not make this more newsworthy; it means they or their agents are very adept at squeezing every single PR opportunity until the pips squeak.
What the BBC provided Heat, Price and Andre this morning was a marvellous puff piece that will doubtlessly help sell copies of yellow-press gossip rags and the inevitable next instalments of ghost-written autobiographies.
Note to Auntie. Celebrity news is a poison that takes the mundane and elevates it to prolefeed because someone is pneumatic, bendable and poseable. It has no place on a news programme; even an accessible programme can be accessible without reporting dross. It is of no consequence and no instructive value. It is frequently hammed up and sold on, pre-packaged, by PRs. In short, celebrity news isn’t.
