The salvation of Jade Goody
The Sun appears to be plumbing depths of hypocrisy not seen since the death of Princess Diana over the death of Jade Goody. I was in the depths of Somerset at the time and so the second run of papers hadn’t made it to the village shop. The pre-death editions of just about all the tabloids had some new Diana scandal on the front. It is a little different in Goody’s case as her imminent passing was known. Nevertheless, The Sun has done a good job of its hypocrisy this time round as well.
The Sun was often full of schaudenfreude at Goody’s antics. Who can forget this wonderful piece of journalism of the first of January of this year:
CBB Jade annoys us most
JADE Goody has been crowned YOUR most annoying Celebrity Big Brother contestant.
The 27-year-old mum of two was voted as the most infuritaing star to ever step into the Celebrity Big Brother house with a whopping 48 per cent of the vote.
Or, following on from her appearances with Shilpa Shetty
Race row Jade gets no Relief
JADE Goody has been axed from Comic Relief thanks to her Big Brother racism shame.
The disgraced reality TV star had already filmed A Question Of Comedy ? a spoof of BBC1 hit quiz A Question Of Sport.
A source revealed: “There was no way Jade could appear on Comic Relief after Celebrity Big Brother.
“She is untouchable despite her best PR efforts to redeem herself.”
The gobby mum of two, 25, was at the centre of a global scandal after laying into Bollywood babe Shilpa Shetty.
I actually thought that The Sun would have been glad to see the back of Goody; that’s the impression one got when it said “Just when you thought you’d got rid of her, she comes back for more – keeping a vice-like grip on her 15 minutes of fame.”
Ultimately, The Sun wants to make a quick buck. There seems to be the additional desire to moralise and insist that everyone lives in a manner that accords with its set of mores. Thus, when Goody decided to marry she became acceptable as she conforms to that ideotype. It managed to excel itself in the title of its obit for Goody:
Mum was a lesbian, Dad was a drug addict burglar who hid guns under her cot
No, Goody’s upbringing wasn’t easy and her parents, perhaps, were not ideal. I find comparing homosexuality to armed robbery pretty repulsive but it fits with the Sun’s belief that anything other than the ‘white bread’ family is, a priori, inferior. Perhaps The Sun isn’t being hypocritical – perhaps its morality stinks.
xD.
