The Angel of the South – part two

The design for the Ebbsfleet Landmark, aka the Angel of the South, will be Mark Wallinger’s fifty metre tall horse. As I mentioned a while back, my preference was for Christopher le Brun’s wing-disc design. All they have to do now is, er, find the money they need to build it. I hope that it does get built (despite the sentence before last). It would, if nothing else, provide some jobs for the nearest town, Swanscombe, and the area.

I’m somewhat concerned by the comparisons made to Stubbs. While Whistlejacket is a wonderful painting and many of his works are technically proficient, they are not, IMHO, particularly visually interesting.

xD.

D’you know where they’re hoping to get the money from? I had initially assumed that there was already some kind of Art Foundation money towards it, or there’d be a government fund, etc. – but your post made me doubt such a backing.
And, yes, a brief echo of your feelings on my front, the wing-disc was a far better idea.

The idea, originally, was to raise money locally and through sponsorship. London & Continental, Land Securities and Eurostar have put up the bulk of the money. Whether it’s enough and whether more will have to be raised – if that’s possible – I don’t know.

Glad you agree with me about the design :)

    xD.

I think the white horse is a good idea, being part of the arms of Kent (Invicta). However, I would much prefer to see the horse rampant (standing on its hind legs), as it is on the shield. That would be spectacular!
