Is there such a thing as autoplagiarism, Nadine?
Nadine Dorries, MP for a constituency that must feel positively disenfranchised, has left a parting post for the summer recess. There’s a bit of waffle, and then something caught my eye.
After all, there is many a slip betwixt cup and lip, or in the case of blogging, betwixt keyboard, journalist and the entire planet.
Every MP guards carefully – especially in the era of 24/7 news coverage – every public word we utter, in a manner that could almost be described as manic. We have all watched, in open mouthed horror, the pain endured by colleagues after a careless whisper flitted from tongue to international newswires in a space of nano seconds.
That sounded familiar, but I wasn’t sure from where until Nadine mentioned Iain Dale’s blog ranking for 2008. In the 2007 Guide, the first paragraph of Dorries’ article (titled ‘Shotgun blogging’, pp143) is

Sound familiar? Indeed, she reprints the whole article on her blog. Now, I don’t know if there any copyright issues or if Iain would even give a damn, but it’s a poor show from Ms Dorries for the loyal readers of her website. Certainly, if the authors of articles from Iain Dale’s guide are going to post them over the web and the lists themselves are going to be available online, one wonders if the hard copy is viable.
xD.

I don’t think it was an issue, as a number of people – at least 5 or 6 – reproduced their articles (including me – but I waited a few weeks and chopped the content up differently).
Authors were not paid, so it is more to do with exposure.
