The Haltemprice and Howden by-election
If I were able to vote in the Haltemprice and Howden by-election, I would vote for Shan Oakes, the Green Party candidate and I encourage anyone who lives in the constituency to vote for Shan. Her blog is here; her party website is here; her Facebook is here; and her Wikipedia entry is here.
Mr Davis has forced this election to discuss a single issue – forty-two days’ detention. As I have said before, this may set an unfortunate precedent for challenges to contest a by-election over an issue. Even if not, choosing a representative for Parliament on the basis of a single issue is foolish; many issues will be debated.
If, though, we accept Mr Davis’ premise (and we are forced to do so as he took the Chiltern Hundreds), we see that there is another candidate standing with a similar policy on 42 days. We must look for other ways in which to differentiate them. Consider Davis’ voting record and the policies of the Conservative Party against the policies of the Green Party and it is clear that the best option in this case is a vote for the Greens.
xD.

Hi Dave,
Great blog! Shan Oakes, the Green candidate, has already confronted Davis on Iraq, 28 days and the death penalty. Hopefully there will be public debates that force him to defend his views in the media glare.
My post on what’s going on in Shan’s campaign is here – http://aleddilwynfisher.wordpress.com/2008/06/29/radical-politics-in-action-shan-oakes-for-haltemprice-and-howden-mp-update/
Cheers,
Aled:)

As I said, I dislike single-issue elections and I’m glad that Shan Oakes is challenging him on his entire record and not allowing him to stand on that one, totemic issue.
I feel rather strongly that progressives/liberals/lefties/’various people against nasty things’ should support the Greens in this instance. I disagree (no surprise) with Tony Benn’s stance of supporting Davis as; backing him for two years’ worth of votes on a single issue in a potentially tight parliament is bad enough, but doing so when there is another candidate who agrees with Davis and Benn on 42 days but is very much closer to Benn (I should think) on just about everything else is, frankly, cuckoo.
xD.

What happens in the case of a tied election result ?

Coin toss, I believe. However, with a target constituency size of 70,000, it’s unlikely to happen.
