Dave Worton

One of my friends in my CLP, Dave Worton, passed away recently.

Sadly, I can’t say I knew Dave as well as I would have liked. When I was the CLP Treasurer, Dave was very helpful to me; he often had the tea made by the time I reached his flat on the top floor of his block and I always found talking to him useful. While his advice was always sound, he was, without being unkind, direct; I found this very helpful. He was, I suppose, an idiosyncratic man; he had an old amplifier in his hi-fi system – old as in ‘with valves’ – because he preferred the sound it produced; once it was warmed up, the result was very good, particularly as he had a great collection of Bob Dylan LPs. His opinions, even when people disagreed with him, were always respected for his intelligence and insightfulness.

More than that, he was active. Really active. He was CLP secretary for ages and a perennial election agent. As Labour is not as succesful in the City of Westminster as we’d like, he also gave a lot of time to the community. I remember talking to him about the Westminster Education Area Zone board he sat on and how pleased he was to be able to be involved in it.

He will be sorely missed.

But the bottles are done,
We’ve killed each one
And the table’s full and overflowed.
And the corner sign
Says it’s closing time,
So I’ll bid farewell and be down the road.
- Bob Dylan, Restless Farewell

xD.

Sad news indeed. I knew Dave for many years as a colleague, drinking and sparring partner in BT and after.
