Heath Ledger
I’m actually rather sad about Heath Ledger’s untimely death. He came across as a decent sort in interviews and I rather liked some of the films in which he acted. Indeed, some of them will go down as classics. Ten Things I Hate About You, Monster’s Ball, Ned Kelly and, of course, Brokeback Mountain. A serious film about gay, American cowboys that received a generally positive reception in a pretty homophobic country is no mean feat and its success is in no small measure down to Ledger’s acting.
Some of his other films – A Knight’s Tale, for instance – were fun but not classic while some – The Order – were pretty rubbish (apparently – I haven’t seen The Order). However, Ledger was developing as a serious actor capable of diverse roles. It is a shame that we will not have the opportunity to see him in future films; he could have become a really great actor.
Heath Ledger, born Perth, Australia, 4 May 1979, died New York, USA, 22 January 2008.
