Thanks to America at Thanksgiving
Spiked asks, via Chris Dillow, for what things we should give thanks to America.
1. ICANN. While I hope that net neutrality is maintained, ICANN, possibly more than any organisation, keeps the internet ticking over. It was set up by the US Government.
2. Cinema. While an awful lot of rubbish comes out of Hollywood, some absolutely wonderful pieces of cinema, from Citizen Kane to The Birds to Terminator 2 and a consistent series of good, solid films that more than make up for the dross.
3. Making photography a recognised art-form along with painting, sculpture and the like. More than anyone else, Alfred Stieglitz showed both that photography was not a novelty and that it could be used for social commentary, but there are many others.
And to everyone reading this who hails from the US of A, I wish you a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving.
xD.

When people talk of American culture, it is almost always in negative terms, but the examples given here show, I think, remind us that there is a genuine, American high culture.
